Caption: A fossil specimen of Dicranograptus ramosus Hall. A fossil graptolite. (Graptolithina.) Cairnsgarroch Gairy, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
Description: This specimen is from the low clingani Biozone of the Ordovician and is from Cairnsgarroch Gairy. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 15122. Dicranograptus belongs to the Dicranograptidae Family, it is a proximally biserial form that divides distally into two uniserial reclined stipes. Earlier graptolites were scandent i.e. fused back to back but some later types became partly 'unzipped' like the Y-shaped Dicranograptus. The rapid evolution of graptolites makes them excellent geological timekeepers and they are used extensively to date the rocks in which they are found. They were particularly numerous in the Ordovician and Silurian. Fig. Mem.for Geology of Carrick and Doon Sheets 8W/8E.
