Caption: A fossil specimen of Didymograptus (s.l.) superstes. A fossil graptolite. (Graptolithina.) Pulnabrick Burn, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
Description: This specimen of Didymograptus (s.l.) superstes is from the Ordovician gracilis Biozone and was found at Pulnabrick Burn. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 14995. Didymograptus is a graptolite with a uniserial rhabdosome and two stipes with a single row of simple straight thecae. It is a pendant form, the stipes hang down from the sicula. The earliest graptolites, the dendroids first evolved in the Cambrian and lived rooted to the sea bed. Later graptolites became free-floating and planktonic and developed a range of hydrodynamic strategies to remain buoyant and avoid sinking to the sea floor.
