Description: | Wilkingia belongs to the Sub-class Anomalodesmata of bivalves which is characterized by much modified burrowing or boring forms with aragonitic shells and desmodont dentition i.e. much reduced or absent teeth are replaced by accessory ridges lying along the hinge margin. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 7640. This specimen has ornamentation concentric about the umbo. The Anomalodesmata is a group of great antiquity and ranges from the Lower Ordovician to Recent times. This specimen is from the Carboniferous Limestone Series which is Lower Carboniferous in age.Bivalves are a type of mollusc, present-day examples include cockles, mussels and oysters. |
