Description: | The cast of a curled up Pterygotus anglicus eurypterid, a scorpion-like aquatic arthropod. Pterygotus lived from Silurian to Devonian times. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSM 89258. Eurypterids or sea scorpions are distant relations to land scorpions and lived mainly in estuaries and coastal lagoons. They are usually less than 20 cm. long though there are several giant forms including the Devonian Pterygotus (Erettopterus). They were horny-coated predators that sometimes reach a length of two metres. They preyed on other euripterids and armoured fish. They are divided into three suborders, Eurypterina, Pterygotina and Hibbertopterina. This specimen is from the Devonian. |
