Description: Zygopleura rugifera var. rowlandsi is a Carboniferous gastropod from the Calciferous Sandstone Series. It belongs to the Family Zygopleuridae. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 4982. The genus Zygopleura has a slender shell with a smooth protoconch and strongly convex whorls. It has well-defined riblets with a pronounced parasigmoidal curve. Gastropods make up a very large group of molluscs that inhabit all aquatic environments from the deepest oceans to shallow terrestrial ponds. They evolved in the the Cambrian but since the paleogene (Tertiary) they have become the extremely common.
