Description: | Bythotrephis simplex was previously known as Chrondrites simplex and was found in the Carboniferous Cementstone Group of the Calciferous Sandstone Series from Glencartholm in Eskdale. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5596. Holotype. A plant consisting of separate single filaments up to 2.5 millimetres across. The filaments in this specimen appear to lie in a confused mass and it is thought that each strand grew separately but assumed its present tangled appearance subsequently. This specimen is an important 'holotype' and has been figured in a paper in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh by Robert Kidston. Figd. as Chondrites simplex, R. Kidston, Foss. Plants Eskdale & Liddesdale, T.R.S.E. vol. 30, pt. II, 1881-2, pl. XXXI, fig.14. Altered to B. simplex. Kidston. Proc. Roy. Phys. Soc. Ed. Vol. 12, 1894, p. 238. |
