Description: | Sphenopteris is a form-genera where the leaves have small deeply divided leaflets with a central vein from which spring a number of branched lateral veins. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5566. Holotype. This specimen is from the Upper Carboniferous, overlying the EllCoal, Westphalian series Coal Measures and was found at Barony Pit, Oldbyres Farm, 1.5 miles west of Auchinleck. Some sphenopterid faunas are now known to belong to the fern-like plants of the seed-bearing group pteridosperms i.e. gymnosperms with fern-like foliage and true seeds born on leaves, while their true affinity of others is unknown or obscure. Pteridosperms ranged from the Devonian to the Mesozoic. Figd. R. Kidston, T.R.S.E. vol. 51, pl. III, figs. 1 &1a, also Foss. Plants. Carb. Rocks. G. Brit. Mem. Geol. Surv. 1923, pl.
