Caption: A fossil specimen of Sphenopteris cymbiformis Kidston. A fossil plant. (Plantae.) Calderwood Glen, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Description: This specimen of Sphenopteris cymbiformis is from the Oil Shale Group of the Calciferous Sandstone Series of the Lower Carboniferous and is a member of the Sphenopteris form-genera of Carboniferous plants. This specimen was found at Calderwood Glen, East Kilbride. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5563. Syntype. Sphenopteris is characterized by leaves with small deeply divided leaflets with a central vein from which spring a number of branched lateral veins, though there are considerable variations throughout the form-genera. There are a range of species of Sphenopteris such as Sphenopteris fragilis, Sphenopteris incurva, Sphenopteris affine. The Lower Carboniferous saw a marked increase in the number of plants evolving. This eventually led to the large coal-forming forests of the Upper Carboniferous. Figd. R. Kidston, Fossil plants Carb. Rocks G. Brit. Mem. Geol. Surv. 1923-1925, pt. II, pl. XXXII, figs. 4& 4a.
