Description: This specimen of Sphenopteris fragilis is from the Limestone Coal Group, the lowest lithostratigraphic group of the Upper Carboniferous in Central Scotland. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5562. Green Spot. In Machrihanish where this specimen was found the Limestone Coal Group consists of a cyclic sequence of siltstones mudstones and sandstones and thick coal seams including all those worked in the Machrihanish Coalfield. The Limestone Coal Group varies in thickness from 30 m. in Ayrshire to 550 m. in the northern part of the Central Coalfield. A large part of the Scottish coal mining industry has been based on the coals of the Limestone Coal Group. Figd. R. Kidston, Foss. Plants. Carb. Rocks. G. Brit. Geol. Surv. 1923-5, pl.
