Description: | This specimen of Rhacopteris is from the Carboniferous Calciferous Sandstone Series from the River Esk at Glencartholm. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5598. Holotype. Rhacopteris is a form-genus with large wedge-shaped leaflets with large numbers of veins radiating from the base of each. It was very common in the Carboniferous flora. A form-genus is a unit in taxonomy especially used for plants that are only part of the whole individual and that usually occur widely separated from other parts e.g. leaves , stems, roots or seeds. The genus will have grouped into it several similar forms but they will lack a common ancestry. Figd. as Sphenopteris geikiei, R. Kidston, Foss. Plants. Eskdale & Liddlesdale. T.R.S.E. vol. 30, pt.
