Caption: A fossil specimen of Rhacopteris inaequilatera Goeppert. A fossil plant. (Plantae.) Hailes Quarry, Slateford, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.
Description: The Rhacopteris flora is a grouping of fern-like fronds found in the Lower Carboniferous which contain certain similarities allowing provisional names to be given to the grouping, the 'form-genera'. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5590. Fossil plants are generally found in a fragmentary state, the foliage, branches and fructifications usually detached and scattered. Rhacopteris form-genus is characterized by large wedge-shaped leaflets, veins radiating from the base of each; though occurring rarely above or below, this form is mainly characteristic of the Lower Carboniferous strata. This specimen is from the Carboniferous Calciferous Sandstone Series, Wardie Shales, Oil Shale Group. Figd. R. Kidston, Fossil plants Carb. Rocks G. Brit. Mem. Geol. Surv. 1923, pl. 50, fig. 3.
