Description: | Alethopteris lonchitica is a member of the Late Carboniferous trigonocarpalean pteridosperms or seed ferns, a type of gymnosperm. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 4736. Trigonocarpaleans developed a variety of growth habits including lianas, ground creepers, shrubs and trees. Alethopteris had very large fronds up to seven metres long. During the Carboniferous many new groups of plants evolved and great forests grew in the tropical swamps and deltas. Trees were mostly clubmosses and horsetails and the earliest gymnosperms (seed-bearing plants). This specimen was found at Hamilton. |
