Caption: | A fossil specimen of Lepidodendron veltheimianum Sternberg. A fossil plant. (Plantae.) Dundonald Colliery, Fife, Fifeshire, Scotland. |
Description: | Lepidodendron is one of the best known fossil lycopods to be found in the forests of the tropical swamps and deltas of the Carboniferous Coal Measures. It reached tree-like proportions with trunks about 30 metres in height and diameters up to one metre. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 1279. The tree had many branches at the top and the stems were covered with elongate strap-like leaves, which when shed left the characteristic rhomboid-shaped leaf scars as seen in the photograph. This specimen is from the Carboniferous Limestone Coal Group from Dundonald Colliery, Fife. |
