| Description: | Coniopteris is a true fern or pteropsid. This specimen is from the Jurassic, a period where fern forms were a very important part of the flora. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 14724. Coniopteris is a common form of the Cyatheaceae, it has finely divided fronds that have small cup-shaped fertile segments. The Mesozoic floras were very different from the earlier Carboniferous floras, the giant lycopods were replaced by smaller herbaceous plants similar to modern club mosses, the pteridosperms do not occur in the Mesozoic. The most noticiable change is the abundance, variety and widespread distribution of cycads. Ginkgos also spread thoughout the northern hemisphere while today only a single species remains. |
