| Description: | Stylina alveolata is a coral from the Jurassic Kimmeridgian rocks of Helmsdale in Sutherland. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5060. The coral polyps may occur as a single individual ? a 'solitary' coral or may form a colony to create a compound coral. Stylina alveolata lived in a shallow marine Jurassic shelf sea and is associated with a extensive fauna of corals and brachiopods. Corals are soft-bodied animals called polyps that live in a calcareous skeleton called a corallum. The corallum is formed by the polyp removing calcium carbonate from the sea water which is then used by the polyp to create the corallum. Corals are entirely marine and can be found at most depths and in most latitudes. Coral reefs are restricted to the warmer regions of the world's oceans. Mentioned Proc. Geol. Ass. 1930 pp. 78-79. |
