| Description: | The genus Buchia (alternative name, Aucella) is characterized by an inequivalve shell with a convex left valve and a planar right valve. Oblique, thin-shelled, with robust concentric ribs, short hinge line. The right valve has a small anterior auricle, an ear-like extension of the dorsal region of the shell. Fine radial ribbing and concentric growth lines can be seen. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3594. It is found in the Lower Kimmeridgian of the Upper Jurassic near Helmsdale in Sutherland. The inside of bivalve shells is marked by the attachment areas of the muscles and ligaments responsible for opening and closing the shell, these features with the teeth and sockets are important for classification of the bivalves. Most bivalve live by filtering water-borne food particles although some extracted nutrient directly from the sediment on which, or, in which they lived. Figd. N.W.
