| Description: | Belonging to the Superfamily Hildocerataceae, the genus Ludwigia is characterized by fairly stout forms with a moderately wide umbilicus, the depression caused by the last complete whorl of the shell. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3057. An Upper Jurassic form from the Inferior Oolite, murchisonae zone of Skye. The Ludwigian fauna preceded the later Sonninian fauna. The Inferior Oolite is well developed in the Hebridean region and is very similar to that in England. It attains a maximum thickness in Skye (375 feet) and Raasay (600 feet) and represents a period of marine incursion of a warm sea. |
