Caption: A fossil specimen of Hippopodium ponderosum J. Sowerby. A fossil bivalve. (Mollusca, Bivalvia.) Raasay, Invernessshire, Scotland.
Description: This specimen of Hippopodium ponderosum is from the Lower Jurassic, Lower Lias, raricostatum zone of Raasay. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 2295. Like Cardinia and Astarte, Hippopodium was a member of the muddy sand community and an infaunal (burrowing), suspension-feeding bivalve. The Lias was a marine shale facies that in Skye and Raasay consisted of the lower Broadford Beds composed of limestone and shales and the upper Pabba Shales consisting of sandy micaceous shales.
