| Description: | Nerinea roemeri a turreted marine gastropod of Oxfordian, Jurassic age from Clyneleish Quarry, Brora. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 10207. The nerineids lived in the Jurassic and Cretaceous and were noted for the extreme turreted nature of their shells, i.e.they were up to 20 times taller than wider. Twenty one genera are known from the Jurassic and twenty-five from the Cretaceous. They did not leave any descendents and their ancestors are unknown. Nerinea belong to the the Mesogastropoda, an Order that ranges from the Ordovician to the present and that had an elaborate and efficient system of pectinibranch gills. |
