| Description: | Part of a slab covered in Protomiodon, a Jurassic bivalve from the Great Estuarine Series near the base of the Estheria Shales at the Lealt River, North Trotternish, Skye. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 5438. Green Spot. Protomiodon has a ovate or trigonally ovate and compressed shell, it is unornamented and has pronounced growth rugae. The Great Estuarine Series was characterized by a great thickness of beds of estuarine character and fauna. It attains a maximum thickness in Northern Skye of 600 feet. Bivalves have calcareous shells and have two intermixed phases, an organic matrix and a crystalline calcium carbonate form of calcite or aragonite.
