| Description: | Belonging to the Family Arietitidae and Subfamily Arnioceratinae, Metarnioceras is from the Lower Jurassic, Lower Lias, upper bucklandi zone and was found in Broadford, Skye. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 4816. Throughout the Jurassic there was a continual influx of new ammonite types and the dying out of old ones, this allowed the period to be subdivided into a series of ages defined by the succession of forms. Each age is characterized by the dominance of one or more families. The Psiloceratids preceded the Areietids and the latter were followed by the Echioceratids and Deroceratids. |
