| Description: | The genus Kosmoceras belongs to the Superfamily Stephanocerataceae and Family Kosmoceratidae. This specimen is from the Upper Jurassic, Oxfordian, ornatum zone from Brora. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3702. Kosmoceras has a moderately evolute form with its shell coiled in a plane spiral, it has a simple aperture and irregular ribbing. The latter is interrupted by an irregular row of lateral tubercles. It also has strong ventral tubercles and a smooth ventral sulcus. The ammonites indicate an open-water marine environment. The ammonites can be distinguished from other cephalopods by their strongly folded and often very complex suture line. |
