| Description: | Prionodoceras cf. serratum is from the Kimmeridgian prionodoceras zone, Upper Jurassic of East Sutherland. It is an ammonite with a moderately evolute coiling and stong ribs. Note the strong keel or ridge on the venter (outside of the coiled shell). British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3134. The Kimmeridgian was marked by a shallow shelf sea with a submarine scarp, fault controlled by the Helmsdale Fault leading to an offshore deeper marine basin of bituminous shales. Numerous submarine fans flowed down the scarp. Ammonites have proved very valuable in stratigraphy for zoning the rocks in which they occur. Their rapid evolution enables time periods as low as one million years to be defined. |
