Description: | The image shows a gatepost made from large squared blocks of sandstone which has been fractured as a result of the insertion of an iron hinge fitting. Such radial fracturing in stone is a relatively common feature in old buildings, where metal fittings become corroded leading to an expansion in volume. This can exert such intense pressure that the stone will split apart. In a case like this the only long-term solution is to completely replace the sandstone block. Such damage can be prevented by embedding the iron in a substance such as lead to prevent water penetration and prevent the corrosion process. |
