| Description: | Echioceras is an ammonite with evolute keel with many whorls and widely spaced straight ribs. It had a worldwide distribution in the very early Jurassic. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3076. The history of the ammonites is one where type after type is raised to prominence, declines and then vanishes in rapid succession. There was a continual influx into British waters from the Mediterranean regions. The early Jurassic saw the rise and fall of a number of super families, the Psiloceratids, the Arietids, the Echioceratids and the Deroceratids of which Echioceras rothpletzi is a member. These were followed by the Polymorphitids and then the Hildoceratids - all with clear morphological evolution. The specimen is from the Jurassic Lower Lias, ?aplanatum zone. |
