| Description: | Belonging to the Superfamily Hildocerataceae, Sonninia is a form that has a relatively evolute shell, an initially acute keel (part can be seen on this specimen, most is missing) and sickle shaped ribs on the sides. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 2975. This specimen is from the Sonninian fauna of the Upper Jurassic, Inferior Oolite, sauzei zone and followed the earlier Ludwigian fauna. The cephalopods were the most highly developed of all the classes of molluscs and the only one to have produced free swimming forms with large brains and sense organs including eyes. The cephalopods were divided into two main groups, those that had an external shell, such as the nautiloids with simple septa and ammonoids with complicated folded septa; and the forms with internal shells such as the belemnites. |
