Description: | The Falkirk Wheel is as much a sculpture for the 21st Century as an exceptional feat of engineering. Designed to reconnect the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals between Glasgow and Edinburgh, the Wheel is a fitting symbol for the #78 million Millennium Link project, the largest UK canal restoration ever. Situated in a natural amphitheatre outside Falkirk, the remarkable boat lift is a piece of working art and a monument to the future. The only structure of its kind in the world. The Wheel is able to carry eight or more boats at a time with a single trip taking about 15 minutes. Day visitors can experience the thrill of the Wheel from special 'trip' boats at the site while the Visitor Centre provides the most sensational land vantage point from which to view the Wheel in action. The Falkirk Wheel was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 24 May 2002 |
