Caption: Harrison Arch, Observatory Road, Edinburgh.
Description: The Harrison Arch commemorates the life and work of Sir George Harrison (1812-85) who was Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh from 1882 to 85. The Harrison Arch was opened on 12th September 1888. The arch is built of red sandstone from Dumfriesshire, possibly from Locharbriggs quarries near Dumfries. It is one of the earliest uses of red sandstone in the City. The sandstone shows dune cross-bedding, indicative of a desert, wind-blown origin.
