Caption: A view looking into the Cwms and across the Hope Bowdler Hill from 600 yards south-east of Caer Caradoc summit, Church Stretton. Looking east-south-east, Shropshire.
Description: The highest fence on the latter closely follows the line of the Cwms - Hoar Edge Fault. Uriconian (Precambrian) rocks form the summit of Hope Bowdler Hill. The bracken-covered ground in the Cwms with scattered trees consists of Caradoc and Cambrian sandstones and shales resting unconformably on ? Western Longmyndian conglomerates which are found in stream sections in the wood forming the right centre of the picture. The wooded hill in the right centre is Helmeth Hill, composed of Uriconian rocks overlain by Helmeth Grits dipping to the south-west (right) and faulted against the Western Longmyndian. This fault - the Lawley Fault - keeps close to the path which runs up the Cwms in the middle of the picture. The Crags in the right foreground are rhyolite Uriconian tuffs. Hazler Hill appears above the Helmeth Hill and the northern slopes of Royleth Hill beyond. The Welsh Borderlands is an area of classic geology distinguished by Precambrian rocks, some of the oldest rocks in England. They are generally very hard rocks and very resistant to erosion and hence they often form the prominent hills and ridges of the area.
