Description: | Coombe Quarry, 1/4 m. NW of Hayle Place, Maidstone. Looking SE. Quarry section in the upper part of the Hythe Beds. At the top of this section the beds are weakened and decalcified to a depth of some 10 ft. below ground level, though thin seams of chert, unaffected by solution, remain to show roughly the original stratification. The lower part of the face shows the irregular impersistent character of the beds of limestone or 'ragstone' a feature typical of the upper part of the Hythe Beds around Maidstone. |
