Description: A closer view of the central part of the upper face of Coombe Quarry, 1/4 m. north-west of Hayle Place, Maidstone. Looking east. Quarry section in the upper part of the Cretaceous Hythe Beds. The junction between the dark glauconitic loams of the Sandgate Beds at the top of the section and the underlying Hythe Beds is not very clear, the latter being to some extent weathered and decalcified at their top. The Hythe Beds consist of layers of massive sandy limestone or ragstone, with thin lenticular seams of chert, alternating with softer, calcareous sand or hassock (darker coloured in the photograph). The Hythe Beds and the Sandgate Beds belong to the Lower Greensand. Towards the end of the Weald Clay times the salinity of the Wealden lake increased as the connection with the sea grew stronger, finally the barrier was breached and the lake became a shallow, marine bay in which the Lower Greensand was deposited.
