Description: Maidstone. Looking E. The Archbishop's Palace, Maidstone. This group of buildings together with the church, facing the River Medway, are of 15th century date, built of Kentish Rag from local quarries. The plain massive character of the architecture is well suited to Kentish Rag; under the action of weathering the stone flakes and crumbles at the surface, so that smooth surfaces become roughened in course of time, and finely-carved details tend to become obliterated.
