Description: | Giwern Hill Quarry (East). Gilwern Hill Quarry (East). In Carboniferous Limestone. The basal Millstone Grit can be seen in the top right-hand corner of the picture. An orange clay, the topmost member of the Llanelly Formation can be seen immediately below. The remainder of the Llanelly Formation forms the upper half of the quarry and consists of well-bedded in places wavy bedded pelletal micritic limestones with thin clay interbeds. The topmost white bed is calcretized under the overlying clay palaeosol. The massive Gilwern Oolite forming the base of the quarry has a buff coloured palaeosol complex at its top also. |
