Description: | Craig-y-cwm, rear wall. Oolite with differential weathering, Lower Limestone Shale. The oolite near the base of the limestone division of the Lower Limestone Shale is 4.85 m. thick on Craig-y-cwm and typically consists of irregularly-bedded medium to coarse-grained grey oolite with few fossils, parallel and small-scale trough cross-stratification, scattered elongate mudstone clasts and discontinuous crack-like mudstone partings. The hammer head (125 cm. long) rests on the base of a diffuse bed, with wavy bedding formed by anstomosing strings of yellow-brown calcareous sand enclosing oolite pods. The oolite is preferentially dissolved by rainwaters to give the striking honeycomb weathering. A gritty oolite with scattered shell debris occurs at the very base of the photograph and asymmetrical ripple-marks in a thin sandy laminated oolite at the top. The oolite forms a persistent crag around the face of Craig-y-cwm. |
