| Description: | The shaft station at the 310 fathom level. Loading a two-decker cage. The pump column is seen in the pump and ladder-way compartment on the left. In 1906 South Crofty was operating from Bickford's Shaft and Palmer's or Engine Shaft. The company realized that for successful further exploitation new vertical shafts were required, and the Robinson and New Cook's Kitchen shafts were begun. The Robinson Shaft passed through the Main Lode between the 205 fathom and 225 fathom levels. Development proceeded east and west of the Robinson Shaft. The Carn Brea area is a strip of country about a mile broad mainly between the main road through Redruth and Camborne and a line following approximately the crest or major axis of the Carn Brea granite ridge and extending from the west of the district to Redruth, a distance of five miles. |
