Description: | Taken from Coedyprior Common, above Llanover looking SW towards cirque of Craig-y-cwm. Craig-y-cwm and Old Red Sandstone scarp. Strike-section (true dip 15 degrees to the west) of part of the Old Red Sandstone scarp, extending north - south from the Blorenge to beyond Pontypool, which forms an outer scarp to the East Crop coalfield scarp. At 'A' is a dip-slope in the Senni Beds and the approximate Senni Beds - Brownstones junction is marked by 'B'. Crag 'C' is formed by pebbly grits in the middle of the Upper Old Red Sandstone, some 20 m. above the Upper Old Red Sandstone - Brownstones junction at 'D'. Crag 'E' is formed by a 5 m. oolite post whose base lies 3 m. above the base of the Lower Limestone Shale. The grassy ledge 'F' 20 m. above this crag separates pits in the calcarenites at the top of the limestone division from a low crag in the calcite mudstones beneath. The basal 5 m. of the shale division succeed the calcarenites and are overlain inconformably at 'G' by Namurian extending up to the skyline. |
