| Description: | Concentrates from all sources are passed to flotation cells for removal of sulphides and then to the tin dressing floor, shown here, where they receive final treatment in buddles (centre) and Kieve tubs (right). In this process the material is stirred in water while the sides of the tubs are beaten with mechanically operated wooden mallets. This causes the cassiterite to settle to the bottom while impurities (ilmenite etc.) can be scraped off the top when the water has been drawn off. The objectives of mineral processing are to separate out the ore from the gangue or waste minerals. The ore goes through a number of processes from crushing, grinding to separation. By the stage in the photograph the ore has been reduced to concentrates which undergo the final process of separation. |
