Caption: Opencast coal, subsoil restoration on an opencast coal site, Swallow section of Wentworth opencast site, Yorkshire.
Description: Looking south-east at Swallow section of Wentworth opencast site, 900 yd. E. 22 degrees S. Hood Hill Lodge. Subsoil restoration on an opencast coal site. When the final cut has been backfilled the whole site is levelled by bulldozer and tractor-drawn scraper, achieving the effect shown in the photograph. The next stage in restoration will be to scarify the surface and then spread the topsoil from the mound in the middle distance. Early methods of restoration were subsequently proved to be inadequate due to the thin topsoil, this was a result of the standard practice of stripping and storing only 50 percent of a site's topsoil for later use. Other problems were a lack of artificial drainage and total lack of subsoil.
