Description: Looking north-east at Swallow section of Wentworth opencast site, 500 yd. E. 26 degrees S. Hood Hill Lodge. An opencast coal site worked by draglines awaiting levelling. A typical scene on an opencast site that has been worked by draglines, after the coal has been removed. Mounds have been built by the draglines during the backfilling of cuts. The next stage will be to level the area. This is one stage in the restoration of the land to agriculture. In the early years the restoration process was crude and ineffective but over the years techniques have improved greatly. The focus has been chiefly on agricultural land but in recent decades the successful protection, enhancement, translocation or creation of wildlife habitats has become important.
