A typical scene on an opencast site that has been worked by scrapers, after the coal has been removed. Mounds have been built by the scrapers during the backfilling of cuts. The next stage will be to level the area. In the mid 1940's the lack of suitable plant and machinery was a major problem to achieving the increasing targets of coal extraction. Most plant available in 1942/43 was of small size and mostly universal excavators and towed scrapers. After a series of exchange visits to the United States an increasing amount of large machines were brought in. By 1944 124 large excavators and 51 tractor/scrapers had been brought into the UK. |
