Caption: Opencast coal, the fine cut of an opencast coal site, Tankersley Common opencast site, Yorkshire.
Description: Looking north at Tankersley Common opencast site, viewpoint 900 yd. E.15 degrees N. Tankersley Grange. The final cut of an opencast coal site. Extension of the cut is prohibited owing to the overhead ropeway. When the small area of Swallow Wood showing in the bottom of the cut has been removed the cut will be refilled with stored overburden from the first couple of cuts. The overburden on the right consists of 24 feet of mudstone and sandstone. After filling of the final cut the site will be restored to agricultural land. This will include levelling and spreading topsoil. This simple technique proved insufficient due to the thinness of the top soil, the lack of subsoil and field drains.
