| Description: | Looking south-south-west at Orchard St. Leonards opencast site, Warwickshire Coalfield, 1/4 m. east-south-east of St. Leonard's Church, Dordon. Faulting in coal seam. The photograph shows how faulting has affected the 18 in. coal known as the Lower Trencher which lies between the Deep Rider Coal and the Seven Feet Coal. The Deep Rider Seam has been won from the area at the bottom of the opencast face on the left of the photograph. The Orchard site was one of the first opencast sites to begin production in 1941. By 1942 the face was 1,200 feet long with 30 to 40 feet of overburden. Working was by means of three draglines loading into tractor-drawn loading cars. |
