Description: Redborough Farm opencast site, Leicestershire Coalfield, 1 m. south-east Packington Church, Ashby de la Zouch. Folding and unconformity affecting New Red Sandstone and Coal Measures. The dark beds above the tractor on the left are red marls resting on sandstone (pale) and these on red marls with pebbles forming the basal bed of the New Red Sandstone. A few feet of stained Coal Measures intervene between the New Red Sandstone and a thin coal separated by 2 feet 6 in. grey clay from the Nether Lount Coal. The crest of the anticline has snapped and one limb of the Nether Lount Coal pushed over the other. The Middle Lount Coal is cut out by the New Red Sandstone on the crest of the fold. These beds display the Carboniferous Coal Measures with the overlying Triassic beds. The latter are generally red in colour, reflecting their deposition in a semi-arid to arid environment and contrast markedly with the Coal Measures.
