Description: Looking north-north-west at Stainborough Fold opencast site, 500 yards west 15 degrees north. General view of opencast coal site. On the left are backfilled cuts, on the right is an area of sandstone stripped of soil ready for working. The large dragline and power shovel are lengthening the cut. At the near end of the cut two power shovels are loading coal into lorries. On top of the coal seam a bulldozer and eight men can be seen cleaning the surface. To the right of the bulldozer, drilling machines are boring 50 feet holes horizontally into the 30 feet face of sandstone. These will be used in blasting down the face after the present cut is cleared of Parkgate Coal. The Parkgate Coal is one of the three main seams in the area, the other two are the Barnsley and the Silkstone coals. Various types of coal were worked in the Barnsley area, steam, manufacturing, house, gas and coking coals. In some seams two or more types are worked separately or sorted after being hewn.
