| Description: | Looking south-west at Spring Wood opencast site, 1280 yd. N. 25 degrees W. Temple House Farm. General view of opencast coal site - filling an old cut. On the near left is unworked ground, on the right is the material removed from the open cut. Three methods of filling the old cut from a new cut are being employed: (1) the dragline in the centre of the photograph is backfilling, (2) dumpers are tipping to the right of the dragline, and (3) explosives have been used to bring down the face. From its beginnings in the Second World War all land used for opencasting had to be restored to as near original condition as possible. In January 1943 the Ministry of Works stated that it was the responsibility of the Directorate of Opencast Production to return the ground to a condition fit for use for agricultural purposes'. Early restoration methods were shown to be poor. |
