Caption: Opencast coal, unworked pillar of coal supporting power lines, Barnby Bridge opencast site, Yorkshire.
Description: Looking south-east at Barnby Bridge opencast site, 350 yd. W. 29 degrees N. Barnby Bridge. Unworked pillar of coal and overburden on opencast coal site. A pillar 70 ft. in diameter has been left unworked to support the post carrying power lines. The foreground is refilled ground. In the bottom of the cut the partly-worked Flockton seam of coal can be seen. The 20-ft. face is black shale overlain by yellow clay and sandstone. Beyond the cut soil has been removed. There are two Flockton coals the Flockton Thin and Flockton Thick (or Flockton Coal). The latter has been extensively worked, largely in connection with the overlying Tankersley Ironstone. The seam varies in thickness but is commonly between two feet and two feet five inches thick.
