| Description: | Looking north at Kine Moor opencast site, 300 yd. W. 15 degrees S. Warren Royards. Opening out a new cut on an opencast coal site. The dark area is the surface of the Whinmoor Seam bared as the dragline lengthens the cut. On the right below the jib of the dragline is unworked ground. The long mound in the centre is overburden from the open cut dumped into an older cut from which the coal has been removed. On the left a mound fills a still older cut. The early stages of the development of opencasting during the Second World War were rapid, by the end of 1944 419 sites had been opened and a total of 40 million tons of coal proved. By the end of the war in 1945 150 sites were operating at an overburden/coal ratio of 7:1 and were employing 7000 people. |
