| Description: | Looking north at Stainborough Fold opencast site, 450 yards north 38 degrees west. Stainborough Fold. Digging overburden from coal in opencast working. Following the forward preparation by blasting, the loosened sandstone is filled into the previous cut to expose another panel of coal. The walking dragline standing on the ground to be excavated is 450 tons in weight, has a jib 150 ft. in length and uses a 7 cu. yard bucket to move up to 500 cu. yards of material per hour. The power shovel in the bottom of the cut stands on unworked coal. Opencast coal extraction is a well-established, efficient surface mining industry started during the Second World War under the Ministry of Fuel and Power and later under the Directorate of Opencast Production. It worked formally under the Defence Regulations which effectively gave powers to take possession of the land and to work it. |
