Description: Carrington Farm opencast site, 3/4 m. N. of Smalley Church. Opencast coal series. Rock excavation. On this site the Piper Seam is overlain by 25 ft. of bind or mudstone capped by 10 ft. of sandstone. The proximity of buildings limits blasting to such an extent that it is possible only to loosen blocks. These are removed by face shovel. The sandstone block in the digger bucket weighs some 2? tons.
