Description: Thacker Barn opencast site, 1 m. E. of West Hallam Church. Looking NE. Opencast coal series. Excavating coal from opencast working. The clean surface of the Tupton Coal occupies the middle of the photograph as far back as the power shovel which is loading coal. On the left is the undisturbed mudstone to be worked in the next cut. On the right is the subsoil taken from the open cut. At the bottom of this tip a trench is left to keep spoil from falling on the coal.
